The day has finally come to accept that two of my four children are getting too old for Easter Baskets and the like. They'll still get candy (or I'll never hear the end of it) and we'll likely still dye eggs, but this year, I decided I would try something a little different. So, I made some cute little orange cupcakes with yummy frosting, coconut and jelly beans on top; the handle is a sour straw. They're super simple and delicious!

Yummy!! Just think. when Easter is over you don't have to worry about where to store the Easter baskets until next year, they just got eaten. LOL
Erin, children are NEVER too old for Easter baskets. Mine demanded theirs up until they left home to go in the service (Elaine Air Force and Miles Army)
BUT, when we married Lew Elaine was 9 and Miles was 7. That year I made the kids baskets out of rice krispie and marshmello stuff. shaped them in a big bowl then after they dried lined them with syran wrap and filled them like any other basket.
Well Lew saw what I was doing after the kids went to bed and made the statement, "Aren't they too old for that kind of stuff?" Well I didn't tghink so so I decided to test out just who old he was (38 at the time). I made him a bunt cake basket with the top side up and decorated. Then I placed the three "baskets" on the dining table.
The next morning the kids got their baskets and headed off for their rooms to gorge on goodies while the cake basket sat there. Lew walked by the table and took a good look at least two dozen times in the next two hours while I watched and tried not to laugh. Finally he asked who the cake basket was for. I just looked at him and said I had no idea because the Easter Bunny left it there. With not a seconds hesitation he grabbed the cake basket and took off for his den. He didn't even offer to share a piece of his Easter basket with me! And neither did he ever again comment that they kids were too old for Easter baskets or Advent Calendars or anything else. Of course he always after that expected to have a "visitation" too. BB
Gee I should have done a little spell checking and what not before pressing the button. Oh well, I think you probably understood me anyhow. :) Happy Easter! BB
Exactly, Ticker! Every year I find a basket (thrift stores have very cool ones) and stuff it full of Easter grass (don’t even get me started on that stuff!) and candy and whatnot. I wait ‘till early Sunday morning and place them on the front porch and wait. What comes next is the point where I want to qualify my “getting too old” statement. Trust me when I tell you, it is nothing more than a reminder that I am also getting older. I’ve tried everything to prolong the process. One year I even bought “functional” baskets thinking they could at least make use of them thereafter…not so much. I have recently been informed (by the eldest and apparent spokesperson) that they still want the candy and other stuff, they would just rather we stuff it in an egg and let them look for it. A scavenger hunt was also suggested. In light of this new information, and to squeeze at least on more Easter basket in, I made the cupcakes. Somehow this seems to quiet the “my kids are growing up so fast” chant that frequents my thoughts and brings on all those other maternal (and sometimes irrational) feelings to cause a small uprising in my blood pressure. I still refuse to hear any “there’s no such thing as Santa” talk under my roof! LOL
